Hi all,
I have a (very simple) question regarding the default page that wp/k2 opens up. I would like to have the about page as the default page instead of the blog page. In other words when i enter my url www.example.com the first page i see should be the (static) about page, instead of the blog page.
I know this should be easy, however i'm new to the whole wp/k2 experience. Thanks in advance!

how to create a static front page with k2 from maxpower (http://www.maxpower.ca/how-to-create-a-static-front-page-with-k2/2006/01/27/)

Thanks for your fast reply Jess! Actually I have tried this before posting my question here. However it didn't quite work out the way i wanted. Maybe i missed some code or did somthing else wrong, i don't know. Is there an other way of forcing wp/k2 to a static frontpage? Hope to hear from you.

You can also try this: WordPress Codex (http://codex.wordpress.org/Pages#WordPress_as_a_CMS)
which will take you to this plugin (http://semiologic.com/software/static-front/) (the same one used in the maxpower how to) but it has a bit of a different way of doing things. I don't know if it'll work with k2 though, but it's worth a shot. I think you might try maxpower's how to again, because k2 uses theloop.php to call the stuff on your site.

Jess, thanks again. But i have also tried that. It has more or less the same result. Not the result i am looking for though. Maybe some more info on my part will help. I use wp 2.01 and the latest k2 beta. I test my site with ie 6 sp2 and firefox 1.501.
I don't know if it is a possibility but can i supply a link directly in the index.php or home.php to force k2 to a specifice adres? So that it would act as a sort of redirect. Which will guide you from example.com straight to example.com/?page_id=12 for instance?

you can write it in your .htaccess file. this is what you would put
Redirect /olddirectory/oldfile.php http://yoursite.com/newdirectory/newfile.php</pre>
I think. If that doesn't work let me know and I'll keep looking.

Jess, im sorry it must be me. Still not what i need. This is the problem more or less. http://www.flexsource.nl/bog/pic.jpg
The static front page plugin option tricks k2 into echoing the content of a post called home, but does not substitute the navigation on the right. (the static page that i want it to open has some children pages). I could make a new template and put the home post in that, but i am not sure that will help me. Another thing is that i will want to use the blog in a normal fashion.
So anybody got an idea.

I have been searching some more and tried this
http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_a_Static_Front_Page
Doesn't seem to work at all. I did change the htacces file, but to no availe
Also i have been fidling around with the static page plugin, but that has 3 disadvantages.
1. When people visit the site the first thing they will encounter is the blog page
2. When using the plugin i cant use the blog function anymore in a normal way
3. The children pages of home (home has 3 lower level pages) are not shown on the right side. When you click on the tab home, nothing happens and you will be redirected to the blog page again.
If you want you can see this in action at www.flexsource.nl
Does somebody have an idea to fix this? Maybe i am coding it wrong or somthing.

Thanks Jess! It seems that we are going to be partners in solving this little wp/k2 mistery.
maybe its helpfull to see the difference
www.flexsource.nl (this is what is showing the "static page" using the plugin
www.flexsource.nl/home/ this is how the static page should look.
Im trying to direct people directly to the last page. I would like to do this without making use of the plugin because that will interfear with the normal blog. And that is the reason why i use wp afterall. i want to have a blog.

ajw

Uh, no. it didn't work out and this is a live site so i changed everything back. Why? Is maxpower the correct way to do it and i'm just to dum to make it work?

I hate to spoil your fun but seeing this thread is kinda hmm...u know what i mean.
This is a confirm feature on next version of WordPress (the code already applied in 2.1 Alpha), where u can choose a static Page as your default front page. Admin Panel -> Option -> Reading.

As Zeo said, it will be there, as well as some other things. Here is a link to some screenshots (http://flickr.com/photos/ryanboren/sets/72057594072903818/)..
Zeo, just curious, but is the 2.1 alpha1 files being updated to the latest security patches as 2.0.2 (http://wordpress.org/development/2006/03/security-202/) has done? Just was wondering if I should take the leap and use 2.1 alpha1 on the main blog or not..when I had upgraded a test blog to that, from 2.0, it didn't seem to give me problems at all.. thanks in advance..

Of course the security update already applied to alpha1.
FYI, K2 is currently not compatible with 2.1 alpha1. Mostly because of the new WordPress page structure which have the same ability as post(publish, draft, private). The K2 sub menu kinda mess up.
Furthermore the WP devs havent fix the bug with wp_list_pages depth parameter yet.
This would be no problem if you didn't have sub page in your k2 blog afaik.

I was so "hot" to see the wp 2.1 alpha in action that i did an installation.
you can check it out at: <a href="http://alpha.bunshitsu.com/">alpha.bunshitsu</a>
but keep in mind:
it's only a developement area -- nothing will be left unchanged // everything is temporary.
and btw.: latest official K2 r167 up to latest svn-version r213 (which is still numbered as r209) will have a broken header-navigation in WordPress 2.1 alpha (r3636)

Update: Zeo was posting during my writing // same info twice, sorry

the far I know there is not any ready-made theme with a "real" header-navigation that works with wp 2.1alpha. I tested the last days some old and new themes and all of them had problems w/ the subpages-navigation IF the main-pages gets a navigation at top w/ tabs.

Thanks for clarifying this Zeo.. :D I "might" just use the alpha on the main blog then, well maybe...still debating on it though lol.. (please note: Though, I'm posting in here, I'm not currently using the K2 theme on the main blog..or test blogs..)
I had joined however, because I wanted to share some "fixes (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/61234?replies=3)" that were brought up for the default kubrick 1.5 that I have applied here at this test blog.. http://www.vindictivebastard.net/kubrickfixed/
However I "think" I have to still work out some tweaks for the display in Opera though.. I have also made up or revamped the Default 1.5 that is, a "all sidewall" image Default1.5R2 theme, which again will have to have some tweaking done to diplay properly in Opera..it's in the theme switcher..
I hope I didn't upset anyone specific for sharing this stuff.. :( And thanks again for clarifying my original question Zeo.. :D ;)

thanks sybold -- it's close to be fixed ... now i just have to get rid of the misinterpreting blog-tab and the tab/page which hosts the blog. take a look at: <a href="http://alpha.bunshitsu.com/">alpha.bunshitsu</a>
i defined my "about" page as the start-/frontpage and the page "journal" as the one which has the blog ...
